OUR PRACTICE
Hordaland Kunstsenter supports a wide range of artistic practices, and we do not privilege any single medium or way of working. Since our founding, we have hosted and supported projects spanning exhibition-making, performance, sound, publishing, moving image, socially engaged and participatory practice, as well as research-based and discursive formats that unfold over time rather than resolving into a single object or presentation.
We are particularly interested in artists whose practice moves between disciplines and resists easy categorisation. This plurality of approaches is reflected in our public programme and in the artists we have hosted in residence. We understand a residency not as a guarantee of a finished product, but as a space to think, test, share, and develop work at whatever stage it is at.
If your practice does not fit neatly into a single category, or if you are unsure whether your way of working counts as suited to a residency, we would encourage you to apply. We are genuinely interested in hearing how you work and what conditions would best support your process.
This residency model opens up a wealth of resources for both regional artists and invited residents, expanding their international networks and allows for dialogue with practitioners engaged in the Bergen cultural scene. Hordaland Kunstsenter is an active and engaged cultural centre, deeply embedded within a wide community of artists and local cultural practitioners.
As a resident with HKS, you will be part of a vibrant community where opportunities for informal exchange, such as shared meals, studio visits, and spontaneous conversation, are as valued as structured programming.
ABOUT HORDALAND KUNSTSENTER
Hordaland Kunstsenter was established in 1976 as the first artist-run art centre in Norway. The core of our activities is our exhibition program, in which commissioning new projects from international artists plays an important role.
PUBLIC PRESENTATION
It is expected that the resident artist shares their research and offers insights into their practice through a public presentation / talk at Hordaland Kunstsenter during their stay. The format of this is not a fixed one, and is made in dialogue with the residency coordinator.
ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION
The guests stay in a quiet residential area just a few minutes walk from the art centre which is situated in downtown Bergen. The one bedroom, self-catering apartment is furnished and equipped with Wi-Fi and has a fully functioning kitchen and spacious living room.
Hordaland Kunstsenter received funding from the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture to facilitate this project.
